Beacon After School Students Create Comic Strip – “Diary of a SCO/Beacon Kid”
May 7, 2026 / Independent Youth News
Students at SCO’s After School program at the Beacon at MS 35 created a wonderful comic strip, “Diary of a SCO/Beacon Kid” based on the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” books.
After reading books and watching short films of the series for inspiration, the youth sketched out a comic strip on art paper and submitted their idea for approval. Once approved, they used digital photography and Canva design software to create the final project.
The students, in grades 6-8, are part of Lit C.R.E.W. (Literacy – Cultivating Readers, Engaging Writers), a student literacy enrichment program focused on strengthening reading, writing, and communication skills through engaging, youth-centered activities.
Lit C.R.E.W.:
- Engages students through book clubs, reading challenges, literacy workshops, and special events
- Emphasizes student voice, discussion, and critical thinking
- Supports academic growth, confidence, and speaking skills
- Is implemented as part of Beacon/Expanded Learning programming at Stephen Decatur MS 35
- Has been funded and reported through ExpandED Schools grant initiatives
“Diary of a SCO/Beacon Kid” will be entered in a city-wide visual arts competition.
We’re so proud of our students for what they’ve created and the hard work they put into it!
