Ensuring a fun-filled year of adventures for students throughout Central Brooklyn, more than 80 supporters turned out to support this year’s SCO Family Dynamics Youth Mentorship Annual Benefit. The Mentors raised $11,300 at SPIN New York, the original ping pong social club. Proceeds support the Mentoring Program’s annual activities for mentees, including monthly outings to recreational and cultural sites in New York City. The fundraiser was organized by Mentors Drew Herzon, Anya Bingler, Hank Teran, and Maxwell Glassman.
The Family Dynamics’ Youth Mentoring Program matches students ages 7-12 with young professionals – all volunteers – who act as role models throughout the year. The monthly outings give the mentees – youth in SCO’s school-based programs in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Bushwick, Brownsville, and East New York, Brooklyn – a chance to establish relationships with mentors while enjoying new experiences.
“Spending time with young professionals while experiencing everything New York City has to offer gives our students an opportunity to build relationships with trusted adults, learn about new and interesting career paths and participate in fun cultural and recreational activities,” said Carrie Stewart, Assistant Executive Director at SCO Family of Services. “Kids tell us it’s a highlight of their time at our Beacon Community Center, and parents value us knowing that their kids are engaged in something safe and worthwhile on Saturdays.”
“We happily joined SCO’s mentorship program back in August 2015, looking to build friendships and provide guidance to those in need,” said Anya Bingler and Maxwell Glassman, veteran Mentors. “It is truly rewarding to facilitate cultural and educational experiences for our mentees across the Greater New York City area.”
Mentor Drew Herzon added, “I joined the Youth Mentorship program three years ago to build relationships with the students in the area and other mentors who wanted to help give back. It’s been rewarding to watch the kids grow up over the years.”
