In an effort to support families in need in NYC, the Nu Beta Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., and the Gamma Rho Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. have partnered with SCO of Family Services to host a virtual Toy Drive to benefit children and families in foster care.
The two fraternal organizations reached out to members and alumni to visit online Amazon and Walmart registries to shop for toys, sporting goods, art supplies, and a host of other items for babies, children and teens in SCO’s foster care program. They delivered carloads of gifts to SCO’s Genovese Family Life Center in Jamaica, Queens, where they were distributed to the children and families.
More than 200 gifts were donated to help bring holiday cheer to children and youth in foster care. A special event was held on December 18th to celebrate the Toy Drive’s success. The event was hosted virtually on Zoom for those who donated toys, while families participated in an intimate, socially-distanced, gift-giving experience. Each child was able to select a special gift to open on their holiday as well a personal “Santa Snack Bag” to enjoy individually.
“SCO is so thankful to the Nu Beta Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., and the Gamma Rho Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. for their generosity and for thinking of our kids during the holidays,” said Heidi Schieck, SCO Family of Services Assistant Director of Homefinding. “It has been a pleasure partnering with them and we look forward to working together in the future.”
