QUEENS, NEW YORK (December 16, 2024) — The Divine Nine sororities and fraternities came together December 6th to throw a holiday party for SCO Family of Services’ youth and families.
The event took place at SCO’s Ottilie campus in Briarwood, where 170 children in attendance received toys and gifts. Numerous activities were available for youth and families, including a book giveaway hosted by the Queens Public Library, which provided every child in attendance with a new book. Guests also enjoyed music and food, and participated in several raffles.
The Divine Nine, also known as the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), was founded on May 10, 1930, at Howard University in Washington, DC. with the mission of working together during a time when African Americans were being denied essential rights and privileges afforded to others. Since its inception, the Divine Nine have worked to help local communities, and support organizations like SCO. The Divine Nine comprises nine different sororities and fraternities, including Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Beta Sigma, Zeta Phi Beta, Sigma Gamma Rho and Iota Phi Theta.
For the past five years, the Nu Beta Sigma chapter of the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority and the Gamma Rho Sigma chapter of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity have partnered together to host a toy drive for SCO. The event has grown to include all members of the Divine Nine, who joined forces to put on an even bigger toy drive for SCO with the goal of providing even more children with a special gift and a wonderful evening this holiday season.
